Additional info from session drummer David Heinke:
Remains:
Roy--bass, lead vocals during chorus
Ant--gtr, low vocals during verse
Christian--gtr. high vocals during verse (not present during basics tracking...I think he was finishing up a tour of some sort)
Dunno who played synth--roy or leggy?
This was from Day 1--just me, roy, and ant. The beat is a basic "Rock'n'roll Part II" kick/snare beat. I definitely used the upside-down snare head trick. There were a lot of takes, I think because it is this really odd middle tempo, so each bass drum hit was it's own movement (too slow to get a good rebound bounce). Leg fatigue. The drum fills in the middle were sort of inspired by the fills in ELO Kiddies by Cheap Trick. What I like about this version is that roy sings lead during the chorus, and the slide up to the second "nothing remains..." is glorious. Also, the snare sound is f-ing awesome. It was the first track we laid down, and it was odd...nobody knew what we were going to sound like--the songwriting demos were very skeletal--so there was an air of hesitation and evaluation that day. "Was it good?" Not oodles of talking on the commute back to roy's place. Not bad or anything, we were just...thinking about it. I think the other song from that day was Germany. I don't think they ever finished our version. It wasn't great (although we did effectively come up with the final arrangement that day).
